Aniseed Myrtle Liqueur

Flavours

Of all the aniseed flavoured drinks, Aniseed Myrtle is closest in character to Sambucca.

Aroma - Predominantly aniseed wth the support of spicy overtones

Palate - Aniseed flavour strongly envelopes the palate. The initial sweetness is well balanced by a medium spirit warmth, lively acidity, a lingering aftertaste and a luscious mouth feel.

Botanics

Aniseed Myrtle rejoices in the botanic name of Backhousia anisata. It belongs to the family Myrtaceae and shares the same genus as Lemon Myrtle – from which we make a liqueur – and Cinnamon Myrtle which adds spice to Moore's Vintage Dry Gin.

The essential oil of the variety of Aniseed Myrtle we use is richly endowed with anethole. Anethole is also found in copious quantities in Aniseed, Sweet Fennel and Star Anise. Anethole gives each of these plants their strong anise character. However, each plant contains many other compounds which give them their individual character.

The Source

The Aniseed Myrtle tree calls the rainforest around Bellingen its home. Bellingen is close to Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, on the eastern seaboard of Australia.  Soaring up to 50 metres in the wild, it is also a very handsome tree in cultivation when clothed in its creamy white flowers in Spring and Summer.

Our Aniseed Myrtle is grown on a plantation close to its natural habitat. This ensures that the flavour remains faithful to that produced by the trees in their original rainforest home.

Therapeutics

The oil of Aniseed Myrtle is known as an antiseptic, bacteriacide, carminative (decreases flatulence and colic) fungicide and gastro-stimulant. These properties make it an excellent digestive tonic and specific for stomach upsets.  In many countries, liqueurs are referred to as digestives due to their calming influence on the stomach and assorted regions after a meal. Aniseed Myrtle Liqueur is a premium digestive thanks to its inherent calming compounds.
